THE SIZE DOES MATTER - A table made of almost thousand kilos Carrara marble with stainless steel framework. Width 460 cm, depth 175 cm, height 75 cm, weight approximately 1000 kg.

Despite its size and mass, approximately 1000 kg, the piece remains to look airy and in motion. THE SIZE DOES MATTER is like a feathery light giant shuttle, steadily flying through its surrounded space.

The piece THE SIZE DOES MATTER has only one single relatively small table base, what was ‘a big challenge’. Normally, the minimal number of supporting table bases for a comparable size and weight would be at least two, three or even more. An other challenging aspect was the desired oblique angle of the table base to evoke associations of movement, flow, and lightness. To realise this a structural stainless-steel framework had been mathematically calculated and designed to make the design possible.

A total of seven different parties worked together to realise the piece - the artist, the structural engineer, the stonemason, a company making the stainless steel framework, a furniture maker to make the table dismountable, a sprayer to paint the stainless steel profiles, and a special transporter that could coordinate the placement of the table top.

Through its king’s size measurement together with the use of the marble and its oval shape, THE SIZE DOES MATTER exudes boldness, impressiveness but remains sophisticated and delicate. The two whimsically black profiles which pierce easily through the solid perfect image like sharp knives, create a certain abstract level of rebellion.

Notice that only one black irregular triangle is present on the frontside of the table base. It is minimally folded to the left side, as a subtle playful imperfect detail. While the backside of the table base has no profile and remains empty. From this perspective the triangle on the table top is also minimal. Resulting in two dissimilar sides and perspectives; the void and the mass.

What one sees, depends on the point one stands - it changes one’s perceived reality. The aesthetic table includes therefore a physics reference - Theory of Relativity - and carries a philosophic message.

The size and weight of the table requires special care and transportation. Which means that the table cannot be placed on a second floor of higher. However, placement on the first floor or lower should be possible if building structures are sufficiently load-bearing.
