WHATEVER, I STILL HAVE STYLE ANYWAY - An imperfect chair, dissimilar on all sides and made of coated rough steel with beige velvet upholstery. A kind of Wabi-sabi-meets-Miami-Vice-and-Yves-Saint-Laurent-mindfuck-chair.

Width 73 cm, height 72 cm, depth 58 cm. Set of four slightly different pieces

WHATEVER, I STILL HAVE STYLE ANYWAY is a perfectly-imperfect chair with a slightly ‘arrogant’ appearance. The chair seems to communicate with self-confidence, even when it knows it has it flaws. This chair sophistically transforms its imperfections into to its authentic character full of style.

WHATEVER, I STILL HAVE STYLE ANYWAY is asymmetrical and erratic on all sides, still it is quite imperceptible at first glance. All designing lines of the chair run uneven and irregular, yet this is done subtly.

The spectator will not instantly realise which lines are alike and which are not. Forms that seem to run similar, are essentially unevenly and vice versa. The chairs kind of play with the spectator’s mind.

The sharp armrests are dissimilar as well as the side profiles. One side with the short armrest has a sharp shaped lightning flash while the side with a larger protruding armrest, only has a subtle diagonal line to ensure the right balance.

The chair’s backrest is designed relatively low to make the chair appear wider and to give it associatively more steadiness and self-confidence. This, with its sharp, pointy shapes and the beige velvet upholstery seem to make the chair exudes a kind of restrained arrogance.

Yet, WHATEVER, I STILL HAVE STYLE ANYWAY also exudes calmness, dignity, and sophistication but remains, deep down, rebellious. The chair combines refinement and rawness, charm and arrogance, sharpness and softness, perfection and imperfection. It seems to, simply not give a fuck about how its design supposed to be. As fashion today.

Weld spots of the steel have been deliberately kept visible to show its making history, in line with the Japanese Wabi-Sabi teaching, saying that objects with a visible history have more value.

Likewise, the creation process of this chair is still visible and cherished, proving the handwork and craftsmanship. As a contrast, high gloss lacquer has been applied over the rough steel. And sharpness is mixed with soft, light coloured velvet upholstery.

Essentially, the WHATEVER, I STILL HAVE STYLE ANYWAY chairs are totally imperfect but nevertheless the result feels undoubtedly perfect.

Zooming in you would see all its flaws, points of improvement and imperfections, while from a distance you see its style and beauty, and perceive it as relatively perfect - as in life.

All in all, WHATEVER, I STILL HAVE STYLE ANYWAY is like a Yves Saint Laurent cashmere sweater with deliberately designed holes of wear in it. Just as well the chair would not look out of place in a movie set interior of, say, American Gigolo (1980) or Miami Vice.
